Edward L. Charlton

World War II Veteran
 

Edward L. Charlton, 87, of Hopewell Township died Tuesday morning June 14, 2005 at his home following a long illness.

The husband of Elizabeth “Betty” Charlton (nee Lewis), he was born in Bridgeton and was the son of the late John and Daisy Dutch Charlton. Mr. Charlton was a resident of Hopewell Township since 1952 and prior to that lived on East Avenue in Bridgeton.

He was employed by the Owens-Illinois Glass Company in Bridgeton for many years in the maintenance department before retiring in 1981.

A US Army Veteran of World War II, he was a combat infantryman who served in the Northern African Theater and in Central Europe.

Mr. Charlton was a member of the Pearl Street Baptist Church and the American Legion, Shoemaker Post #95. In addition, he was a volunteer with the Mary Elmer Fire Company and helped to build the firehouse. As a golfer, he was a former member of the Centerton Golf Club. He enjoyed wood working, making candles and going to craft shows to sell what he had made. He also enjoyed gardening and working in his yard.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Patricia A. Pennington and her husband Wayne of Pennsville, Margaret V. Ball and her husband Doug of Bridgeton, B. Jean Shimp and her husband John of Pilesgrove and Betty Jane Trewin and her husband Bruce of Woodstown, ten grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and one brother Raymond and his wife Betty. He was preceded in death by six brothers, John, Nual, Richard, Ralph, Bill and Walter Charlton.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon June 17th at 2 o’clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton.

Pastor Jeff Jones of the Pearl Street Baptist Church will officiate.

The interment will be made at the Cumberland County Veteran’s Cemetery in Hopewell Township.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Friday afternoon between 1 and 2 o’clock.
