Chester G. Duffield

Korean War Veteran
 

Chester G. Duffield, 73, of Hopewell Township died Thursday afternoon March 3, 2005 at S.J. Hospital – Elmer following a brief illness. He had been a hospital patient for the last week.

The husband of Catharine Jannelli Duffield (nee Loder), he was born in Cedarville and was the son of the late Hershel Duffield and the late Irene (nee Garton) Duffield Ortolf.

An area resident all his life, Mr. Duffield had been a long time resident of Hopewell Township.

He was a 1950 graduate of Bridgeton High School and following high school served in the military for eight years. He was a Staff Sergeant in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He proudly served his country and was part of the squadron responsible for retrieving undetonated bombs in the Pacific.

After serving his country, Mr. Duffield returned to the area. He worked as a Prudential Life Insurance salesman while educating himself on a part time basis at Glassboro State College (now Rowan). He received a teaching degree and taught in the Woodstown, New Brunswick, Millville and Fairfield school districts. He later became self employed as a painter. In addition, he held his real estate and insurance licenses.

Mr. Duffield enjoyed woodworking, going crabbing and spending time in Sea Isle City.

In addition to his wife of nearly thirty years, he is survived by two children from his marriage to Anne Truitt of Millville, Brad Chester Duffield and his wife Janet of Egg Harbor Twp. and Debbie Duffield of Bridgeton, one step-daughter, Nancy J. Homan and her husband Brian Sr. of Vineland, five step-grandchildren, Lori Jo Homan and her fiancé Bill Rich, Kristi Homan, Brian Homan Jr., Kevin Homan and Brian Holbig and his fiancé Andrea Gerbasoni and two brothers, David Duffield of Fairton and Harold Duffield of Millville. He was predeceased by a step-son, Thomas G. Jannelli Jr. in 2003.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning March 7th at 11 o’clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton with Pastor Daniel Leslie of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer of Vineland officiating.

The interment will be made at Old Stone Church Cemetery in Fairton.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Monday morning between 9 and 11.
