Owen A. Cameron

World War II Veteran
 

Owen A. Cameron, 87, of Hopewell Township, died Friday evening, February 14, 2003 at home.

The husband of the late Mary D. (nee Byers) Cameron, he was born in Bridgeton and was the son of the late S. Allison and Rebecca (nee Owen) Cameron. Mr. Cameron was a 1934 graduate of Bridgeton High School and a 1936 graduate of the Bridgeton School of Business. He was a life long area resident.

He worked at Hurley’s Furniture Store in Bridgeton for five years before entering the U.S. Army in 1941.

A Veteran of World War II, he served in the 4th Army in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre during the Battle of Guadalcanal. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1945 and returned to Hurley’s Furniture Store to work.

He then started to work for the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Bridgeton as a delivery and service driver. He worked there until his retirement in 1979.

Mr. Cameron attended Berean Baptist Temple for more than seventy-five years where he served as a deacon and substitute Sunday School Teacher.

He enjoyed nature and loved to garden. Mr. Cameron was an avid saltwater fisherman and would often spend time fishing in the Delaware Bay. He cherished his time as the announcer of West Lumberland Little League games at Wynn Park.

He is survived by two daughters, Karen Cameron Peoples and her husband Robert of Home Camp, PA and Dorothy Cameron Cash of Hopewell Township, three sons, Neil A. Cameron of Hopewell Township, Owen E. Cameron of New York and Grant C. Cameron of Bridgeton, eleven grandchildren, three great grandchildren and his brother Gene C. Cameron of Bridgeton.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon February 18th at 2 o’clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton, NJ.

The interment will take place at the Cohansey Baptist Church Cemetery in Hopewell Township.

Friends will be received at the funeral home one hour prior to the services.
