Robert "Wil" Costner
Former Area Resident
Robert "Wil" Costner, 69, of Daytona Beach, FL and formerly of Millville passed away peacefully in Orange City, Florida on Wednesday July 7, 2010 while under the care of hospice.
Wil was born in Newport, TN, but grew up in Millville which he always referred to as his home. A graduate of Millville High School with the Class of 1960, he played varsity football and had served as the team's co-captain. In 1964 he entered the US Army and served his country during the Vietnam Era.
A resident of Florida for more than 40 years, he returned to Millville briefly before moving back to Florida. Wil worked in the auto parts business and was well known, not only for his knowledge of the auto parts industry but for the level of service he provided.
An avid deer hunter, he was a charter member of Venatore's Gunning Club. Wil also enjoyed fishing, playing pool, bowling and listening to country music. He was an enthusiastic baseball fan and one of his greatest joys in life was spending time with his family and friends.
Wil will be remembered for his ability to draw a crowd while telling a funny story. He will be missed and his memory cherished in the hearts of countless friends and family who loved his sense of humor, compassion and sweet spirit.
Wil is survived by his wife, Joyce (nee Minichiello) Costner, his three children, Keith Costner (Debora) of Ormond Beach, FL, Tammy Van Kooten (Andrew) of Allentown, PA and Robin McCabe (Joe) of Tallahassee, FL, seven grandchildren, three sisters, Deloris Colican (Stephen) of Bridgeton, Theresa Langley (John) of Pittsgrove and Theda Vurganov (Toli) of Millville and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. He is also survived by his best friends for the last 55 years, Lou Clendaniel and Walt Lau, both of Millville. Wil was predeceased by his parents, Mitchell and Charlotte Costner.
Funeral services were held in Florida at the Basilica of St. Paul Church and the interment took place with military honors at the Jacksonville National Cemetery on Monday July 12th.
Memorial contributions in Wil's memory may be made to SJ Health Care - HospiceCare, PO Box 160, Bridgeton, NJ 08302.
