L. Wayne Garrison
Longtime Bridgeton Resident
L. Wayne Garrison, 86, of Pitman and a longtime resident of Bridgeton passed away at Pitman Manor in Pitman on Monday morning March 15, 2010.
Born in Bridgeton on September 10, 1923, Mr. Garrison was the son of the late Leslie Wayne and Sara R. (nee Borton) Garrison. He was the husband of Mary (nee McHenry) Garrison.
A graduate of Woodstown High School, he served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. He attended Asbury College in Wilmore, KY and was a seminary student for two and a half years at the Temple University School of Theology. Mr. Garrison served as a student pastor in the South Jersey Methodist Conference for five years.
He later went on to work for 20 years at the Owens-Illinois Glass Company in Bridgeton in the selecting department until the plant closed in 1984. He also worked part time in the Bridgeton school system until retiring in 1995.
Mr. Garrison was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bridgeton for many years where he sang in the church choir. After moving from his Coral Avenue address to Pitman eight years ago, he was active at the Pitman Manor and also sang in their choir.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Marjorie Garrison Hiserote and her husband Rev. Dr. Lewis Hiserote of Clinton, three grandchildren, Capt. Ryan Heiserote, USAF and his wife Corrie, Aaron Hiserote and Kaitlin Hiserote, a half-sister, Carol Conway of Woodstown and a step-sister, Christine Clark of Elmer. Mr. Garrison was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Garrison in 1967 and one brother, Walter R. Garrison.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton on Friday afternoon March 19th at 1:30.
Mr. Garrison's son-in-law, Rev. Dr. Lewis J. Hiserote, Senior Pastor of the Clinton United Methodist Church will officiate and he will be assisted by Rev. Elizabeth Mitchell, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Bridgeton.
The burial will follow the services at Overlook Cemetery in Bridgeton.
Friends will be received at the funeral home from 12:30 until 1:30.
Memorial contributions are suggested in Mr. Garrison's memory to the First United Methodist Church, 266 E. Commerce St., Bridgeton, NJ 08302 or to the United Fellowship Fund, c/o Pitman Manor, 535 W. Oak Avenue, Pitman, NJ 08071.
