Ann M. Hotchkiss

Ann M. Hotchkiss (nee Morris), 95, of Upper Deerfield Twp, passed away peacefully Saturday evening February 6, 2010 at home.

The wife of J. Douglas Hotchkiss, they were married for over 63 years. She was the daughter of the late Nicholas Morris and the late Julia Morris (nee Szelickeivico). On March 23, 1914, Ann was born at home on Nicholas Street in Bridgeton. She was the second of three children. She attended Pearl Street School before moving to Woodruff, where she attended Woodruff School, Rosenhayn School where she rode the train to school, then Moore School in Seabrook and finally Bridgeton High School.

As a young woman, Ann enrolled in Rider College, taking courses from their business curriculum. Upon graduation, she began to teach at Rider College. Her career as a teacher then brought her to Merchantville High School and Drake Institute in New York before returning home to Bridgeton in 1941 to teach business at Bridgeton High School. Her contribution to the business education of Bridgeton's students lasted 37 years, retiring in 1978 from a notable career marked by a commitment to educational values.

Starting in the 1950's, Ann and her sister Kathryn opened Kitty Ann Florist on Woodruff Road; they operated the business for many years.

Ann has been an active member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority for over 40 years; she is a member of St. Mary's R.C. Church in Rosenhayn and has always been involved in activities using her creative skills, from sewing to needlepoint to china painting. Ann was also a longtime member of Soroptomist International.

In addition to her husband she is survived by two children, Judith Hotchkiss-Wyks of Scituate, MA and Jon Hotchkiss of Midland, MI, three grandchildren, Ian Hotchkiss and twins, Lucas and Jessie Hotchkiss at home and one sister, Kathryn "Kitty" Peterson and her husband Chester of Bridgeton.

Friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Friday morning February 12th at 11 o'clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton.
The interment will take place at Overlook Cemetery in Bridgeton.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Friday between 10 and 11 A.M.
