Decorated Korean War Veteran
 

Alfred L. Ball Sr., 79, of Upper Deerfield Township died Wednesday evening November 7, 2007 at the Regional Medical Center in Vineland after an extended illness.

The husband of Marie F. Ball (nee Melchiorre), to whom he was married for fifty-four years when she died in 2005, he was born in Milwaukee, WI and was the son of the late Hazen and Edith Smith Ball. A longtime area resident, Mr. Ball lived on Beck Drive in Bridgeton for twenty-two years before moving to his current address seventeen years ago.

He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served from 1950 until 1952. He saw duty in Japan and received the Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Star.

Mr. Ball worked as a mechanic for thirty years for Bridgeton Transit and their successor, Garden State Coachways. In addition, he worked for South State in Bridgeton before retiring in 2002.

He was a former member of the Bridgeton Fraternal of Eagles and the Moose Lodge. He was also a life member of the Meade – Woodward Post #1795 VFW in Bridgeton.

Survivors include one son, Arthur Tharp and his wife Pennie of Millville, one daughter, Michele Ball of Upper Deerfield Township, seven grandchildren, Al Ball III, Kellie Williams, Gabe Ball, Melissa Varallo, Michael Tharp and Ryan and John Sherfey, 8 great grandchildren, one sister, Grace Seehousz of Pennsville, one brother, Douglas Ball of Hopewell Twp. and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Alfred L. Ball Jr., a sister Colleen Nahorney and a brother Hazen Ball Jr.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning November 12th at 11 o’clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton.

The burial will take place at Overlook Cemetery in Bridgeton.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Monday morning from 10 until 11:00.
